John Barasa

Administration

The Administration Department is one of the segment key partners focused on contributing to the strategic direction of UVRI-CRP. This is met through fronting strategic questions at all levels of its operations sections that include Human Resources, Information and Communication Technology, Fleet, Procurement, Stores and Logistics,  Estates Management. This allows all UVRI-CRP staff to efficiently carry out their tasks

Clinical Trials

The Clinical Trials Department (CTD) is primarily responsible for the conduct of clinical trials on behalf of the Program. This includes registration of the trial protocols with local and international regulatory bodies and ensuring that the Good Clinical Practices according to the International Conference on Harmonization are followed. The department has a fully equipped pharmacy where investigational and other medicinal products are stored and dispensed.

Laboratory

The department is responsible for performing tests that majorly support HIV vaccine research in monitoring the safety of HIV vaccines in clinical trials specifically biochemistry and haematological tests as well as measuring the immunogenicity of these study products. In addition the lab supports basic science research and field studies through use of a well-equipped state of the art laboratory and highly trained staff. Since 2007 the laboratory has maintained accreditation in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) by Qualogy Ltd and recently under DAIDS-GCLP monitored study labs.

The laboratory is comprised of 4 section; Safety, Serology, Immunology and Molecular sections

Quality Management

The Quality Management Unit (QMU) at UVRI-CRP oversees the implementation of all Quality Management activities for the program. The QMU is committed to real time quality control (QC) and systematic Quality Assurance (QA) driving the program’s quality and integrity in research. The QMU performs a number of quality management activities at the different departments to ensure that all processes contributing to the performance of clinical trials and research studies are conducted properly and that key performance quality indicators are closely monitored to ensure continuous quality improvement.

Statistics & Data

Data being the primary output of research, the department ensures that good quality data is processed by following all the steps of data management. Data management activities include database designing and testing, data entry, data cleaning and backup which are done according to established standard operating procedures. The department also provides input in study proposal / protocol development, and data analysis/ interpretation.

Finance & Accounts

The Finance department is responsible for budgeting, planning, organising, controlling, accounting, auditing and reporting of financial transactions for the Program. The Department utilizes an automated financial management system (Microsoft Dynamics NAV). This is a fully integrated Enterprise Resource Planning system that generates real time financial reports for funders.

Community Studies

The department is responsible for conducting epidemiological, social-behavioural sciences research. It also links the Program agenda to the relevant stake holders including communities and research participants.
